Welsh manufacturing experts at Sony UK Technology Centre have swapped the factory for the field to take on a team of internationally renowned distributors in their annual charity football clash.
Staff from the Pencoed factory, which produces HD and 4K broadcast and professional camera systems for worldwide distribution, went head-to-head with members of RS Components on May 17th.
The event, which is now in its third year, saw team members from the specialist Welsh factory take on staff from the Corby-based electronics distributor to raise vital funds for two worthwhile causes.
The event supported both Sony UK TEC’s chosen charity the children’s ward at Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, and RS Components’ charity Children with Cancer UK.
Sony UK TEC took on RS Components as it is the electronics distributor for leading credit card-sized computer the Raspberry Pi, which is produced by the Welsh facility, with almost 20 million of the world renowned computers made by Sony UK TEC so far.
Following another memorable match at Cardiff City Stadium Sony UK TEC clinched the win on the day, winning 1-0 against a good RS side.
On another successful event, Director of Professional Services at Sony UK TEC, Gerald Kelly said he was “extremely grateful” to all those who took part once again.
He said: “Our annual charity football match with RS Components really is a highlight in the annual Sony UK TEC calendar, and is something our teams gear up for months in advance.
“RS Components is a supplier and customer, but also a friend of the business, so it’s always a great occasion to get together.
“Once again, the game didn’t disappoint, and I’d like to thank everyone who worked extremely hard to make it another fantastic success.
“I’d also like to congratulate both teams on another enjoyable and hard-fought game; we look forward to seeing you next year!
“Most importantly, we are delighted to once again be supporting the invaluable work of the children’s ward at the Princess of Wales Hospital along with Children with Cancer UK.
“It is essential that we continue to support the fantastic work of these remarkable facilities, which make such a vital difference to the lives of children battling serious illness and their families.”
This is the third consecutive year that Sony UK TEC has taken on RS Components to support the work of the Bridgend-based children’s ward. Earlier this month, team players from Sony UK TEC clashed with one another while representing their local areas as Sony Cardiff vs. Sony Swansea, once again raising vital funds for the hospital.
So far, thanks to the team of over 600 skilled team members’ generosity, over £100,000 has been raised through sporting events, fundraisers, and donations to help support the unit’s specialist work.
The fundraising events form part of the Pencoed facility’s ongoing commitment to supporting and enhancing local communities across Wales.
Steve Dalton, MD of Sony UK TEC has been recognised as IOD Wales Chair Jean Church’s Director of the year. Steve received this award among 13 exemplary Welsh Directors who attended the IoD Wales’ Director of the Year Awards 2019, which were attended by The Rt Hon Liam Fox MP, Trade Secretary Liam Fox and The Rt Hon Alun Cairns MP, Secretary of State for Wales.
