Sony UK TEC reflects on its work with The Princess of Wales Hospital in honour of International Day of Charity

In honour of International Day of Charity, Sony UK Technology Centre (UK TEC) reflects on the continued support it has provided to The Princess of Wales Hospital for the last six years.

As part of its corporate social responsibility policy, each year the manufacturing giant has pledged to select one organisation as its annual adopted charity that will benefit from its factory-wide funding efforts.

Since 2013, Sony UK TEC has been supporting the Children’s Ward at The Princess of Wales Hospital, with a goal to create a long-lasting impact on their charity of the year.

Many of the staff from the Pencoed facility hold The Princess of Wales Hospital close to their hearts, having had family members who have spent time in its care. It is has provided them with an opportunity to express their gratitude to the hospital for their incredible work.

Sony UK TEC’s support for the children’s ward specifically is part of their ongoing commitment to bettering the life and opportunities of young people in South Wales.

Alongside the work for the children’s ward, the manufacturing facility has also completed projects for the Special Care Baby Unit such as the renovation of the family room and waiting rooms.

So far £110,000 has been raised for the hospital with fundraising efforts including, charity football days, half marathons, bake sales and annual golf days, with this year’s event set to take place on the 19th of September. Staff from the Pencoed facility have also taken part in a gruelling 300-mile cycle for children battling life threatening illnesses.

With the money raised the children’s ward has received invaluable medical equipment, including two Vapotherm Precision Flow Systems and a High Dependency Unit.

Ongoing efforts include a larger project that will see work undertaken on the SCBU family room and the Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU). These will be completed over the next few weeks.

Beyond assisting the children’s ward at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Sony UK TEC is also dedicated to supporting the local community. Throughout the 2018/2019 financial year, Sony UK TEC contributed to the fundraising of over thirty local organisations, ranging from sporting and social clubs to schools, and more specialised caring centres.

The highlight of the CSR calendar at Sony UK TEC is its annual Golf Day – this year, it is being held on September 19th, with suppliers and friends of the facility coming together to partake in a golf tournament, followed by an auction for charity.

Gerald Kelly, Director of Professional Services at Sony UK TEC, said: “It has been a pleasure being able to support such a fantastic charity and give back to a cause that many at Sony UK TEC hold close to their hearts.

“After learning about the difference that even a small donation can make to the treatment period of both patients and their families, we were so happy that we could help. We sincerely hope that our continued efforts help to bring some comfort to those in the care of the hospital.

“We are extremely proud of the effort made by our team who have taken part in the various fundraising events over the years. As a socially aware business we are committed to working with, and for, the people of South Wales by continuing to support local hospitals, charities, and communities.”
