Wales’ First PlayStation 4 Game Launched

Sony UK Technology Centre (UKTEC), announces the release of the first Sony PlayStation 4 game to be made at its Business Incubation Centre1 in Pencoed.

Infinity Runner, a sci-fi action running game has been developed and published by the site’s tenant, multi-award winning video games developer and publisher, Wales Interactive.

The game developers secured a deal with Sony PlayStation to create the very first PS4 game made entirely in Wales for the PlayStation Network following introductions from the technology giant.

The game will be launched on the Sony PlayStation Network on 21st April and will cost gaming enthusiasts $6.99/£4.99.

Steve Dalton OBE, Managing Director of Sony UK Technology Centre explained: “We are really pleased to have such skilled developers and an enthusiastic and dynamic company as part of our business incubation centre.  As with all our tenants we want to help them grown and with this in mind we introduced Wales Interactive to our contacts within the Sony Computer Entertainment team.

David Banner, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Wales Interactive commented: “Having a studio at UKTEC’s Business Incubation Centre has really helped our business grow over the past two and half years. It’s a great location with a good working environment for our team and fantastic onsite facilities. The introductions Steve Dalton has made for our company have been invaluable to us and played a big part in our studio achieving official PlayStation developer status. Our first PS4 release, Infinity Runner, marks our step up to the next generation console market and sees our studios growth and success continue. We've become a state-of-the-art indie games developer and publisher with the ability to create original games that entertain the world as well as put Wales on the video games map."

The fun, fast paced running game sets players on a mission to escape from a decaying starship whilst battling against the ships inhabitants and ducking obstacles and challenges along the way.  With stylised visuals, 56 Trophies to collect and DUALSHOCK4 controls it’s set to give users a thrilling gaming experience.

Mr Dalton concluded: “To play a part in bringing Wales’ first PlayStation game to life and helping our tenants secure this opportunity is truly exciting. The gaming industry is continuously evolving, however, more often than not many games are typically produced outside of Wales. With the launch of this game it demonstrates that there are opportunities for developers in Wales.  We hope that gamers enjoy playing Infinity Runner and that it leads on to many more games being produced here in Wales for the PlayStation Network.”

Wales Interactive forms part of Sony UKTEC’s Sir Howard Stringer Foundation for Media and Technology which was launched in September 2013.

The Foundation is part of the company's wider business incubation centre and is designed to establish a hub for the media development community, to stimulate the product development of games content from Welsh gaming businesses and to increase employment opportunities.
