Sony UK Technology Centre (UK TEC) was delighted to welcome His Majesty’s Ambassador Designate to Japan, Ms Corin Robertson CMG, to its Pencoed facility as part of her first official visit to Wales ahead of taking up her new diplomatic post in August.
Appointed in April 2026 as the successor to Her Excellency Julia Longbottom, Ms Robertson visited Sony UK TEC to learn more about the company’s operations in Wales, its advanced manufacturing capabilities, and its ongoing contribution to strengthening ties between the UK and Japan.
The visit included a business overview, a tour of the manufacturing facility and engineering operations, and a working lunch with members of Sony UK TEC’s leadership team.
During the visit, discussions focused on several areas of strategic importance, including the latest advancements in manufacturing in Wales, Sony UK TEC’s future growth ambitions, its commitment to sustainability and community engagement, and its inclusive approach to recruitment and talent development.
As part of the visit, Ms Robertson met with representatives from Sony UK TEC’s leadership team, including Managing Director Rob Wilson, Director of Engineering & Quality Kevin Edwards, Commercial Director Ian Worgan, Business Support Manager Kenichi Sakurai, and Head of Corporate Social Responsibility Angela Williams.
Following the tour, Ms Robertson left the following message in the company’s visitors’ book:
“Thank you for a fantastic visit – I feel inspired by everything you are doing here. I’m looking forward to doing my part to support Sony in Wales as Ambassador to Japan.”
The visit builds on the strong relationship between Wales and Japan, which was further strengthened during the Year of Wales and Japan 2025. Sony UK TEC played an active role in supporting the campaign, helping to promote collaboration and shared opportunities between the two nations.
As a Japanese business proudly based in Wales for more than 50 years, Sony UK TEC remains committed to fostering strong connections between Wales and Japan, supporting international collaboration, and contributing to the economic and social success of both countries.
Commenting on the visit, Rob Wilson, Managing Director of Sony UK Technology Centre, said:
“We were honoured to welcome Ms Robertson to Sony UK TEC and share the work being undertaken here in Wales. As a Japanese company with deep roots in Wales, we are proud of the role we play in strengthening the relationship between our two nations. We look forward to working with Ms Robertson in her new role and continuing to explore opportunities for collaboration between Wales and Japan.”
The visit formed part of a wider programme across Wales, which included meetings with Welsh Government representatives, discussions on future economic opportunities between Wales and Japan, and engagement with Japanese businesses and organisations operating across the country.
