Sony UK Technology Centre has been shortlisted for a technology award for manufacturing LED based street lighting for Canadian-based company, LED Roadway Lighting (LRL).
The Pencoed-based organisation is up for the Collaborative Partnership of the Year Award at this year’s ESTnet awards, which celebrate the success of companies in Wales’ technology sector.
Since 2012, LRL relocated the manufacture, test and shipping of its products for the UK market – predominately councils - to Sony UKTEC. During this time Sony UKTEC has reduced lead time from sixteen weeks to eight weeks and achieved a three per cent cost saving on each individual unit.
Steve Dalton OBE, Managing Director, Sony UK Technology Centre commented: “We are thrilled to be shortlisted for the ESTnet Collaboration Award. As an organisation we manufacture Sony high-definition and broadcast cameras and equipment but we also support start-ups, entrepreneurs and third party organisations get their product to market.
“We are known for being a digital manufacturing centre of excellence and we use the latest manufacturing techniques to make Sony and non-Sony goods at the highest quality without being cost prohibitive. Working in collaboration with LED Roadway Lighting is a perfect example of this. We thoroughly enjoy working with LED Roadway Lighting and it’s been and an honour to be manufacturing such a great product.”
The Collaborative Partnership of the Year Award recognises the company that has demonstrated the impact of the partnership on the business and local community as well as sharing best practice for the benefit of the partnership. Sony UKTEC will be competing against SPTS and Gaia Technologies for the award.
Ian Menzies, Chair of the ESTnet, the network representing electronic and software technologies businesses in Wales said: “This year’s shortlist is truly representative of our ever-changing industry [...] the ESTnet Awards are now in their third year and it is so encouraging to see entries continue to grow year-on-year. While we will celebrate the achievements and growth of those new technology businesses in Wales we will also pay tribute to the anchor companies and SMEs that are so well represented in our sector and who continue to offer skilled and well-paid career opportunities while remaining at the forefront of technology development and manufacturing in Wales and the UK.”
The awards will be held on 5th March at the Wales Millennium Centre.
