Sony UK TEC Continues Support for Children’s Ward

Sony UK Technology Centre (UKTEC) announces its continued support for the Children’s Ward at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend.

The Pencoed-based business has committed to raising money for the ward for a further three years.  The site hopes to raise approximately £50,000 in this period which will go towards refurbishing the children’s play area.

The site is aiming to break a company record – intending to raise the highest amount of money for its designated charity in the forty years it has been present in Wales.

Sony UKTEC has been supporting the Children’s ward since 2013 and last year raised £10,000 which was used to buy a Vapotherm machine, which has proved invaluable. It helps babies and children with breathing difficulties by giving them a higher concentration of oxygen.

Other additional donations included hand-held pulse oximeters, which are used to measure the oxygen levels in the blood, drip stands and other pieces of equipment.

Ward Manager, Kaye Aherne said: “We have been very fortunate to be the charity which Sony UKTEC has adopted. They have been absolutely fantastic, raising a phenomenal amount of money. We can’t thank them enough. The Vapotherm machine proved invaluable during last year’s winter months. It really helped some children and babies who had breathing problems.”

Sony UKTEC will be organising and participating in a range of charity activities to help raise funds for the ward. The company recently held a dinner dance, raffle and a charity golf day, which was a huge success and raised another £10,000.

This will be used to remodel the children’s outdated playroom and, while the start date has yet to be confirmed, staff have already seen the plans.

The room will be split into different sections, with a parents’ area where mums and dads can have a coffee and watch the children playing. There will also be a teenage area with computer games and screens, set away from the toddler area, and themed areas for children aged three to 10 years.

Kaye added: “This is indeed a dream come true for us as we didn’t think we could ever achieve the playroom upgrade. The plans look fantastic and we can’t wait for the work to start. Ward sister Angela Lewis and I attended the charity golf evening and it was brilliant. All proceeds raised will benefit the children and families who access our services. The team at Sony UKTEC have been a fantastic support. We really can't thank them enough.”

Steve Dalton OBE, Managing Director at Sony UK Technology Centre, said: ”Since we have supported the ward we have seen at first hand the impact and difference we can make to a young person’s experience.  When young people are undergoing medical treatment they are removed from their friends and normal childhood activities, which can be scary and isolating.  We want to be able to help the ward give them an environment as close as possible to what they would experience outside of a medical setting.

“As such we’re pleased to be continuing our support for a further three years. We believe it’s vitally important to support the local community and the services that are available to the people within the local area.  We look forward to working more closely with staff at on the children’s’ ward and coming up with fun fundraising activities to help raise funds for the ward.”

The Children’s Ward at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend was chosen by the organisation because of its endeavour to provide comfort, care and support to children and their families.
